Have you ever wanted to make a tailored blazer out of knit fabric? Do you want to make an unlined jacket in a woven or boucle or home decorating fabric and don’t know where to begin or how to select a pattern?
Our Jacket Sew Along (Winter 2017) is a great place to start!
We’ll be using two patterns (your choice):
Fitted Jacket:
Hip-length jacket with a notch collar, two piece sleeve, darted front and shaped side back. Slightly extended shoulder line. Fitted lines but not tight-fitting best describes this popular jacket. Sophisticated and tailored looking.
This pattern is suitable for stretch and non-stretch fabrics.
Double Collar Princess Jacket:
Semi-fitted, shapely, princess seam jacket with length and collar variations. Show off your curves no matter what size you are in the most flattering ways possible. Multi-sized 4-22.
Suggested Fabrics:This jacket can be made in a variety of fabrics including linens, wools and coating fabrics! Woven fabrics with substance and body highlight the shape of this jacket. Suit and jacket weight woven fabrics including, but not limited to, linen, cotton, wool, wool blends, LYCRA-blend wovens, crepe, and home-dec fabrics.
You can use a double or a single collar.

How does a Sew Along work?
You’ll sew along with a group assembled at our blog and on our Facebook Group (private). You’ll sew at your own sewing room, on your own time. Each week there will be a different lesson posted on our blog, and discussion will be on our blog and on our Facebook group. You may post photos for fitting or construction help, as well as your finished photos at our Facebook group, the Christine Jonson Sewing Circle.
It’s a peer-led sew along, with some technical Q&A from Christine Jonson herself (you ask the questions, she provides the answers.)
What fabric should I use?
Following the fabric selection recommendations with both patterns, you can choose fabric from your stash.
Our favorite fabric for the Fitted Jacket is a beefy cotton/lycra knit or ponte knit. This is suitable for any climate.
Our favorite fabric for the Princess Jacket (for winter) is a soft knit or woven textured fabric such as boucle and textured wool. You can also use home decorating fabric (although you’ll probably have to serge the pattern pieces before construction, as home decorating fabric is known to ravel like crazy.) You may also make this in ponte knit. For summer wear, try the Princess Jacket in a suit-weight linen or linen/rayon or linen/rayon/poly blend.

No worries, we’re always there on the Facebook group for you after the sew along ends.
Can I really make a jacket? That looks professional!
YES! We’ll help take the fear out of making jackets. Both jackets are unlined and have finishing details designed for ready to wear sewing. This means, sewists who are shown how to make the jacket must produce consistent garments each and every time (and they’re not sewing in a factor in China, but right here in the US!) The construction methods are designed to be nearly foolproof – this benefits the home sewist in that you learn these construction techniques too!
What do I need to do?
Purchase either (or both!) sewing patterns.
Comb your fabric stash or purchase a recommended fabric using the yardage requirements (double click the image in the product to see the full chart)
