+Plus Size Collection

Christine Jonson patterns are known and trusted for their excellent fit. Since 1998 our classic pattern line has offered consistently well-fit patterns in Sizes 4-22.  Starting in the fall of 2020, our +Plus Size Collection will provide that same excellent fit in sizes up to Size 5X.

One of the basic criteria for the +Plus Size Collection patterns is to keep the garments close to the body and to create balance.  I do not advocate using fabric to hide the body. I will not draft patterns that wing out at the arms, and simply add gathers in lieu of a proper fit. I will keep necklines, armholes, and cross overs where I believe they belong, and create beautiful silhouettes. I believe that plus size design should incorporate more than a garment that just covers the body, it should respect the body with good design and a beautiful fit.

A New Fit Model

The new +Plus Size Collection was created using a new fit model as the base and a new sizing chart.  (for an explanation of fit models, read How a Pattern is Made below)
+Plus Size Fit Model:  Size 1X, with measurements 52”- 45”- 56”, E/F cup, 5’8” tall with proportionally average sleeve length, back waist and inseam.

Bust Fit

The sizing grades similarly to the classic fit and offers a 4” difference between the upper bust and full bust measurements.  I chose this distinction as is offers a mid-range fit for the bustline when using knit fabrics. It is often difficult to determine dart depth and seam curves needed for a variety of fabrics. Fabric stretch and recovery at the bust needs to supply a good fit with no pull, yet not drape off the bustline adding fullness at the ribcage and upper abdomen. This is especially important for the dresses in the new collection.

A New Size Chart

You will notice that some of the patterns do not include the full range of sizes from the charts. The sizes chosen for each pattern depend on the intended fit and recommended fabrics. Each pattern will have its size range and finished garment measurements available on the product page.
Also, some patterns will include size LG and XL. When included in the +Plus Size Collection, these sizes follow the +Plus Size sizing chart found below.

How a Pattern is Made

To understand how we developed our new +Plus Size Collection, we need to explain how home sewing patterns are created. A sample pattern is drafted for a “fit model”. Our classic line fit model is Size 12, with measurements 38”- 30”- 40”, B cup, 5’8” tall. The same fit model is used for each new pattern. The pattern is perfected and then “graded” into the smaller and larger sizes. Grading is a multi-step process that creates new sizes with the right measurements and curves. We use a tried and true grade rule that had been tested though years of producing a successful ready-to-wear line, and has now proven true for more than 20 years of home sewing. The resulting multi-sized pattern is then tested in each of the sizes for fit, construction and other details.
